Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer among men and ninth among women. At the same time it takes second place among the causes of death from cancer in men and the sixth in women. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer. Geographical variations in cancer incidence of the liver largely reflect the prevalence of infection caused by the virus hepatitis B, which accounts for almost 55% of all HCC cases in the world. Vaccination programs against hepatitis B virus are very effective, as evidenced by a sharp decline incidence of HCC (60.1%), mortality due to fulminant hepatic failure and mortality due to chronic liver diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccination in Ukraine has a steady downward trend.
